Overview: The FVHS Performing Arts Program
Fairvale High is a very well resourced department with state of the art music, dance and Drama equipment and technology integration. The Department has 3 music spaces [without tables and chairs], 1 Large Dance Drama Studio [previously the Foley Centre] with a wall of mirrors, ballet barres and a sprung Harlequinn Dance floor. This room also has drama lighting including 64 light cans and an inbuilt sound system.
The faculty offers courses across Year 7-12. A broad tutorial program is available to all students and the faculty provides a wide range of extra-curricular performance ensemble opportunities in Music, Dance & Drama. The faculty promotes involvement in an eclectic range of musical styles, allowing students from a wide range of cultures and abilities to experience the joy of music, dance and drama through compositions, research and performance. Students who learn various cultural instruments are also accommodated in all courses from year 7 to 12.

Mr G. Thwaites

Head Teacher of Performing Arts & Languages

Newly appointed Head Teacher in 2008, Mr Thwaites is an experienced Multi-instrumentalist, Musician, Band Director and Music Technology specialist. Mr Thwaites has worked around the Sydney Hotel & Function circuit as a Trombonist, Bass Player and Keyboardist in various Rock & Jazz cover bands. He also regularly tutors and conducts at many other school, University and Community band camps and tutorial weekends all around Sydney. Mr Thwaites has HSC marking experience and is the coordinator of the "South-West" Regional HSC study day committee providing senior students in our region valuable workshops on HSC Music study skills. Mr Thwaites was the volunteer regional school coordinator of the Fairfield Council "Bring it on!" School Idol competition [2003-2009] and has strong, entrenched links to the Youth and Performing Arts Programs at Fairfield Council.
In 2010 Mr Thwaites was the Regional Show Band Musical Director and arranger for both the South West Region Talent Identification Program and the South West Region Schools Spectacular "Director's Choice" at Homebush Bay.
Mr Thwaites has been inducted as an HAICTE 'Highly Accomplished ICT educator' in the PLANE program.
Ms R. Semenov [nee: Axisa]

Mrs Rebecca Semenov [nee: Axisa] is Fairvale High's full time Year 7-12 Contemporary Dance teacher. Mrs Semenov also teaches Year 9 and 10 Drama and is the current HSC drama teacher.
All dance classes follow the BOS syllabus.
In 2012 Mrs Semenove was the SWS Regional Dance Coordinator which involved performances at Homebush stadium for the Director's choice concert.
Mrs Semenov previously taught for 10 years at a private dance studio and also taught Hip Hop Dance classes at the Sydney Dance Company. Mrs Semenov has HSC marking experience. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience in Dance & Drama and specialises in Jazz, Modern Ballet, Contemporary and Hip Hop Dance. As a "New scheme teacher" Mrs. Semenov gained her NSW Institute of teachers accreditation with a high distinction appraisal.

After graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, majoring in piano, Ms. In pursued a career as a music teacher. Having worked at a number of schools in the south west she brought her wealth of experience and knowledge to Fairvale High and joined the Performing Arts faculty as a music teacher in 2007. She has won numerous accolades in piano Eisteddfods which has proved instrumental in her growth as proficient mentor and educator. As a "New scheme teacher" Ms. In gained her NSW Institute of teachers accreditation with a high distinction appraisal.
Mr B. Calder
B. Mus. Ed, A. Mus. A (Sydney Conservatorium of Music)
Music, Bands & Sound & Lighting
Mr Calder studied at the Conservatorium Of Music in Sydney majoring in Classical, Jazz and Blues Piano. He has also studied Guitar, Bass and Vocals. Mr Calder has performed in bands since the age of 19 as a Lead Vocalist, Bass & Rhythm Guitarist. He also performs as a Piano/Vocalist as both a duo and solo act at various functions and restaurants. Mr Calder also works with the South West Region Performing Arts Unit doing Sound and Lighting for events such as the South West Region Schools Spectacular "Director's Choice" at Homebush Bay.
In 2011 Mr Calder is was the Regional Show Band Musical Director and arranger for both the South West Region Talent Identification Program and the South West Region Schools Spectacular "Director's Choice" at Homebush Bay.
Mrs M Hsiao
Music, Mandarin, Year 7 teaming, String Ensemble and bands
Mrs Hsiao is the volunteer regional school coordinator of the Fairfield Council "Bring it on!" 'Own it! School Challenge' [2010 - current] and has strong, entrenched links to the Youth and Performing Arts Programs at Fairfield Council. Mrs Hsiao also has HSC music marking experience.
All Performing Arts courses are university entrance accredited courses [ATAR]. With strong support from the Principal and Senior executive, Fairvale High school offers the HSC courses in Music, Dance & Drama.
